SECTION 1 FRAME ASSEMBLY
The frame assembly is fabricated from ¾ low carbon steel plate and gray iron castings. All of the plate components are water jet cut. I was going to laser cut the parts but decided to use the water jet process because the cuts are so accurate and the finish is so good that most of the machining operations can be eliminated. The process is more costly which drives up the raw material cost over what I had estimated but that is more than made up in machining. Many of the parts on the locomotive will be water jet cut.
The frame castings and other castings on the locomotive will be made with cast aluminum masters mounted on Chain lock aluminum boards and run on one of two totally automated molding lines. Most castings will be gray iron or ductile iron. There might be a few aluminum or bronze castings used later.
The locomotive is designed to use metric fasteners. The reason for this is that metric bolts scale out to be almost exact scale for common inch hardware and are much better than screw machine made model bolts. You might want to check out my PL&E STANDARD 6 dealing with 2 ½ scale hardware.
Shipping will be in two boxes one weighing approximately 45 lbs and the other 35lbs. The finished frame is about 70 lbs.
The frame drawing shows all of the component that is included in section 1.
