1 ½ SCALE SWITCHER

The second batch of SW switchers are now sold out. A third production run might be made in the future depending on demand.

The Pike Lake and Eastern Hartford Shops is preparing to manufacture a second batch of Electro Motive Division switchers. Several body styles will be available including the SW7, SW8, SW9 and SW1200. The locomotive can be purchased as a basic running locomotive without details and paint thru a complete ready to run with all detailing and paint. Several options allow the locomotive to be customized to the taste of the customer.

Construction:

The locomotive body is constructed of precision cut steel sheet welded into one assembly. The body can be lifted off of the chassis for maintenance and access to the batteries that are located under the hood. The frame is fabricated out of structural shapes and 1/4” steel plate. Trucks are cut from steel plate and precision machined for good alignment and tracking. They are fully equalized as the prototype.

Drive:

The drive consists of high performance traction motors, axle mounted and geared to the axles by way of spur gears running in an enclosed gear box. This duplicates prototype practice. Power is supplied by four deep discharge batteries in series parallel configuration developing 24 volts. Control of the motors is by way of a solid state four quadrant motor control that has an output of 120 amps at 24 volts. Dynamic braking is standard.

Performance:The locomotive will handle a two ton train on most railroads. This translates into 6 or 8 cars with two adults in each car. Battery life is 6 to 8 hours under normal use. Batteries can be completely charged overnight.

Controls:

The locomotive is controlled by way of a hand held control box whose cable can be plugged into receptacles on either end of the locomotive. Controls include a master power switch, throttle, reversing switch and switches for headlights (high and low beam), bell and horn. A battery condition indicator monitors the status of the batteries indicating to the operator when recharging is required. The control is designed to decelerate the locomotive to a stop if control signals are lost. Provisions are also available to MU locomotives together to operate several locomotive from a common control.

Sound:

Standard is the Dallee sound board and single 5”speaker that mounts in the power box. This unit provides engine sound, horn and bell. Optional is the premium sound system that includes the Phoenix sound board, external high output amplifier that drive a full range speaker system.

Specification:

A completed locomotive is 16 inches wide by 72 inches long over the couplers and 20 inches high. Total weight with batteries is approximately 600 pounds.
